Hospitality with Heart

How Thompson Chicago Is Giving Hotel Linens a Second Life—And Bringing Comfort to Animals in Need
At Thompson Chicago, luxury hospitality extends well beyond its guest rooms. Thanks to a thoughtful initiative led by Director of Food and Beverage Juliano Machado, the hotel is proving that even the simplest acts of generosity can make a meaningful impact in the community.
In partnership with the Humane Society of Chicago, Thompson Chicago has launched a sustainability initiative that gives gently used hotel linens—including sheets, pillows, comforters, and towels—a second life by donating them to help care for animals awaiting their forever homes.
The idea began just a few months ago when a member of the hotel staff suggested repurposing surplus linens instead of discarding them. Recognizing the opportunity to reduce waste while supporting a worthy local organization, Machado quickly collaborated with the housekeeping team to create an efficient donation program.
Now, each month, the team carefully collects, sorts, and prepares clean linens for delivery to the Humane Society of Chicago, where they serve an important purpose every day. The donated materials provide warmth and comfort for animals recovering in the shelter, create soft bedding for dogs and cats, and are even used during veterinary procedures and surgeries.
"The response has been incredible," Machado shares. "They've sent us photos of the animals using the bedding, and seeing that makes all the effort worthwhile."
The impact has been substantial. During one recent delivery, Thompson Chicago donated enough linens to fill two large shelving units and three oversized collection bins—supplies that directly benefit the shelter's daily operations while helping reduce operating costs.
Beyond supporting animal welfare, the initiative also reflects Thompson Chicago's commitment to sustainability. By diverting quality linens from landfills and putting them to meaningful use, the hotel demonstrates how environmentally responsible practices can also strengthen the local community.
Machado hopes this effort is only the beginning.
His vision is to encourage more hotels throughout the Chicagoland area to adopt similar programs, creating a larger network of hospitality partners committed to supporting local animal shelters. Conversations are already underway with other properties interested in joining the initiative, expanding its reach and increasing the positive impact for animals across the region.
In a time when many nonprofit organizations face growing financial demands, partnerships like these demonstrate that meaningful contributions don't always require large donations. Sometimes, simply reimagining resources already available can transform lives.
For Thompson Chicago, this initiative is about more than sustainability—it's about compassion.
"It feels good to see a little puppy lying on one of the sheets that came from us," Machado says.
That simple sentiment perfectly captures the heart of the program: small acts of kindness can create lasting comfort for those who need it most. Through leadership, innovation, and a genuine commitment to giving back, Thompson Chicago is setting an inspiring example of how the hospitality industry can make a difference—one blanket, one bed, and one wagging tail at a time.
